Rooftop Romance: A Magical Kimpton Canary & Santa Barbara Courthouse Wedding

Hi everyone! As a Santa Barbara wedding photographer, I am always thrilled to help couples plan an effortless, stunning day, and I have a truly special, full-circle wedding story to share with you all today. This journey actually begins before our beautiful couple even had a venue picked out! They happened to stumble across our blog post about Southern California’s best-kept secret free beach venue and instantly connected with our vibe.

We jumped on a few planning calls to chat through their vision, budget, and what mattered most to them. One of our favorite parts of being a wedding photographer in this beautiful area is helping couples navigate the incredible local venue scene. We initially threw out a list of our favorite gorgeous local hotels for getting ready, like the Santa Barbara Inn, Mar Monte Hotel, The Californian, and the Kimpton Canary Hotel. After touring our recommendations, they completely fell in love with the iconic rooftop at the Kimpton Canary for their ceremony!

With the ceremony locked in, they left the rest of the day’s location scouting up to me. Because we’ve photographed all over Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Ojai, we knew exactly how to build the perfect, stress-free timeline.

Santa Barbara Wedding Photography at the Historic Courthouse

To give them the absolute best variety of backgrounds, we suggested starting the day at the historic Santa Barbara County Courthouse. It is truly the perfect venue if you want a balance of dramatic historic architecture, moody Spanish-style hallways, and lush, expansive garden backdrops. Plus, it offers great covered areas just in case of rain! Spoiler alert: the rain held off and the sun peeked through right on time!

We arrived early to scope out the grounds and found a perfectly quiet, crowd-free spot for their first look. Navigating the logistics of a first look can be tricky, but we smoothly staged the groom while bringing the bride over from the car. The second they saw each other, it was all warm hugs, giant smiles, and laughs.

We spent the afternoon exploring our favorite hidden nooks of the courthouse, capturing portraits on the famous spiral staircase, playing with the light in the deep hallways, and taking wide, epic shots in the sunken gardens. As we explored the grounds, there were two incredibly sweet details that made these courthouse portraits extra special. Our beautiful bride was actually an expecting mother in her early stages, just starting to show a hint of her little baby bump! We made sure to capture a few gorgeous, subtle maternity-feeling details to celebrate this exciting new chapter for their growing family. To make things even better, they brought along their adorable puppy for a few shots! Incorporating your furry family member into your wedding portraits always adds the best energy, and this pup absolutely crushed their time in front of the camera.

Before meeting up with the rest of the family, the bride wanted to share a private first look with her dad. We set him up under the courthouse’s treasured magnolia tree, which happened to be in its rare, stunning stage of blooming. It was an incredibly sweet, emotional moment! After some fun family photos under the iconic archway, it was time to get these two married.

An Elegant Rooftop Ceremony Captured by a Santa Barbara Wedding Photographer

Heading over to the Kimpton Canary rooftop, we were blown away by the setup. The creative team at Epic Weddings and Events handled the floral design, transforming the rooftop into an absolute fairytale ambiance. Meanwhile, DJ Kamayo was setting up the flawless ceremony sound and getting his popular photo booth ready for the party.

As the guests settled in, the ceremony began. Right on cue, the sun broke through the clouds, creating a stunning, effervescent glow over the entire rooftop. Their vows were the perfect mix of deep love, shared laughter, and sweet glances.

After they danced their way back down the aisle as husband and wife, we gathered every single guest for a massive, high-energy group photo on the roof! Then, we whisked the newlyweds downstairs for a few quick, romantic portraits around the mosaic valet driveway, the fountain, and a few secret, quiet spots behind the hotel property.

An Intimate Ballroom Cocktail Hour and Sunset Reception

Because they chose to keep their guest list smaller and more intimate, our couple got to genuinely hang out, enjoy their appetizers, and sip cocktails with their favorite people in the ballroom. As an experienced Santa Barbara wedding photographer, I highly recommend this approach as it lets you actually experience your own party!

Soon, everyone headed back up to the rooftop for the reception. The space had been reset to perfection for dinner, and the lighting was pure romance. As the newlyweds made their grand entrance and flowed into their first dance, the sunset light over Santa Barbara was unmatched.

Dinner turned into a series of incredibly heartfelt toasts. Honestly, it was hard to get people off the microphone because everyone had so many words of love and praise to shower on this couple! We finished the night capturing endless memories of everyone dancing under the stars and cutting an adorable mini wedding cake.

This day was a beautiful reminder that when you lean on your vendors and choose locations that match your personality, your wedding day becomes completely effortless.
