Planning a surprise proposal is easily one of my favorite parts of this job, especially when it involves a cross-country master plan. As a proposal photographer Ventura couples trust to document their biggest milestones, I am always down for a little adventure.
Today, I am so stoked to share this beautiful surprise proposal at Picnic Beach in Laguna Beach. Sammy reached out all the way from New York City. He was coming out to the West Coast to visit his girlfriend, Sarah, and he knew it was the absolute perfect time to ask the big question. He wanted to do it at a spot that was super sentimental to them—a beach where they love to spend long beach days and watch the sun go down. I was immediately all-in to help him bring this vision to fruition!
When you book a proposal session with us, you aren’t just hiring someone to hide in the bushes with a camera. We really pride ourselves on being your ultimate planning partners, handling all of the stress, coordination, and heavy lifting so you can just focus on your person. For this session, we looped in our amazing partners at The Picnic Place (who we work with tons for our Montecito and Santa Barbara proposals) to curate a stunning floral design. I personally picked up the floral arrangements, drove them down to Laguna, and designed their perfect landing spot right on the sand.
To make it even more special, Sammy wanted to capture a video recording of the moment. To ensure we got the absolute best audio without breaking the bank, I recommended a great, highly affordable wireless microphone that he could easily purchase himself beforehand. This worked out perfectly because it allowed him to covertly set up the mic on his outfit before even arriving at the beach, keeping the entire surprise completely under wraps. Later on, I took that crisp, clear audio he recorded and stitched it right into the final film, completely bringing the full emotion of their spoken words to life.
Before the shoot, I always ask for a photo of the couple and a description of their outfits. This makes the art of “playing it cool” on the beach completely predictable and controlled—even when the ocean decides to wild out! Right before they arrived, the tide started rushing up, almost taking the floral arrangements out to sea. Cue a last-minute, high-adrenaline hustle where I quickly shifted everything up the sand and readjusted the setup just in time.
As the sun started to dip, they walked up to the spot. Sarah’s reaction was truly the absolute cutest—she was practically jumping up and down with pure joy! They soaked in those first few intimate, tear-filled moments of being engaged while the microphone captured every sweet word. After giving them some space to celebrate, I stepped out to guide them through some casual, fun romantics along the shoreline.
But the surprises weren’t over yet! Right in the middle of our session, Sarah’s family appeared at the top of the bluffs looking down. She caught sight of them, and the waterworks started all over again. They ran down to the beach to wrap the newly engaged couple in giant congratulatory hugs, and we captured some beautiful, candid memories of the whole crew celebrating together. We even got to photograph their epic engagement party later that week!
